PROFESSOR MICHAEL A. O. LEWIS
PhD, FDSRCPS, FDSRCS(Eng), FRCPath, FFGDP(UK), FHEA
Mike Lewis is Emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine at Cardiff University. He has held a number of senior professional positions including, President of the British Society for Oral Medicine, President of the British Society for Oral & Dental Research, Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow and Dean of the School Dentistry at Cardiff University. Academically, Mike has published over 200 scientific articles and delivered more than 700 invited lectures worldwide. He is the author of best-selling textbooks on the subjects of Oral Medicine and Oral Microbiology. Mike is a Member of the General Dental Council and was recently awarded the John Tomes Medal by the British Dental Association for outstanding service to the dental profession.

Course Overview
This lecture will present a range of oral mucosal conditions and causes of orofacial pain that are seen frequently in primary dental care. The material will be delivered in a self-assessed interactive quiz style that will allow participants to gain an appreciation of their knowledge in oral medicine. A contemporary awareness of mucosal disease and facial pain will enhance clinical practice.
Educational Aims and Objectives
The aim of the presentation is to provide attendees with an overview of those conditions that fall within the specialty of oral medicine in such a way that enhanced knowledge will result in improved clinical skills for patient management.
Learning Outcomes
1. Have an appreciation of their knowledge of those mucosal conditions and forms of orofacial pain that are seen frequently in primary dental care.
2. Discuss the presenting clinical features and symptoms of a range of oral medicine conditions.
3. Apply knowledge of oral disease and orofacial pain to enhance patient management and ultimately improve clinical outcome.
