There are clear benefits of an elective period on both a personal and professional level in broadening the undergraduate education.
According to the GDC document in 2007:
It is desirable, though not essential, for dental students to visit other dental schools or dental clinical centres, either in the United Kingdom or abroad, during the period of clinical study. The main objective should be to broaden the undergraduates' education by exploring the dental problems and dental management systems in another context. As far as possible, curricula should be designed to facilitate opportunities for elective studies. Elective visits might be arranged around a project consisting of either audit or research, and the results should be presented on return by students in written form or verbally before an audience.
The Alpha Omega Dental Society and Charitable Trust (London) is able to offer an elective abroad or within the UK to a dental student during their final clinical year.
The process is as follows:
Please submit your CV
We require a short proposal of about 200 words for our consideration
Then a post-elective report of about 1,000 words on the experience and the benefit obtained to be submitted within two weeks of your return
An undergraduate grant of up to £500 may be available towards travel and subsistence
Last year one of our student members travelled to Israel and spent time at the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine at the Hebrew Univeristy in Jerusalem. Please contact us for a copy of her application.
If you would like to apply for an Elective with the London Alpha Omega Dental Society, the first step is to join us a student member.
Once a member, you can submit your elective proposal for consideration to Professor Andrew Eder, Chair of Trustees, Alpha Omega London Charitable Trust, via email to andrew@andreweder.co.uk
This is an excellent opportunity to expand your horizons both professionally and personally by experiencing the possibilities available in our wonderful profession.
We would love to welcome you as well to all the AO meetings in London, both face to face and online where you will be able to meet and mix with your colleagues and take advantage of the mentoring, educational and philanthropic international organisation that is Alpha Omega.
