Surgical Regeneration of Complex Periodontal Defects with Professor Graziani

We were treated to a lecture by Professor Filippo Graziani from Pisa on the surgical regeneration of periodontal complex defects.

Professor Graziani took us through the proper sequence of non-surgical therapy prior to Periodontal Surgery. He showed cases which one might consider as needing a clearance and replacement with dental implants.

He argued the importance of considering the patient susceptibility in planning implant treatment and the benefits of maintaining the patient’s own dentition. Cases with very significant bone loss were shown treated and stable. Cases where bone fill of bone defects following non-surgical therapy were also presented.

In regard to Periodontal Surgery he noted there was insufficient time to consider all the different types of surgery; mucogingival surgery and furcation therapy were not covered.

He focused on pocket elimination and regeneration with the minimal flap approach and the use of enamel matrix proteins. He outlined what he noted as a ‘box’ approach with raising minimal buccal flaps leaving the papilla intact. This was followed by grafting. He showed regeneration of some extensive 2-3 wall defects.

We had entertaining and clear lecture interspersed with references to the outstanding city of Pisa.
